Pictures from the 2011 Taego Order Sami Graduation

Linked below are a few pictures from the 2011 Taego Order Sami (Novice Monk) Graduation/Ordination which took place at Seonam-sa. As many of you know, I had the great honor and privilege to be a member of this class. Ordination took place on October 19, 2011 and these photos were passed along to me via email by my Korean Dharma brother Do Hae Sunim. Most of the portraits with other monks were taken at Bup Ryun Sa in Seoul.

Professors practice Buddhism, have zendo for community practice

By Ben Harris || October 26, 2011

Practicing Buddhism is more of a lifestyle than a religion for Don Socha and Brigitte Bechtold.

Socha, a lecturer at Central Michigan University, has been formally practicing Buddhism since 2000. He said he met a monk who taught in CMU’s Spanish department who introduced him to groups in Montreal where he went for meditation sessions.

He was ordained Bodhisattva in 2002. He said a Bodhisattva is someone who has devoted his or her life to the Buddhist precepts, such as not stealing and not lying.

“In a sense, we’re trying to alleviate suffering in the world. It’s one of the Four Noble Truths,” he said. “The idea is that we don’t go to heaven until the last person’s suffering has been eased. (The Bodhisattvas) will go through hell for others if we have to. And that’s a real thing. We don’t deny reality.”

He said Bechtold, his wife and chairwoman of the sociology, anthropology, and social work department, started practicing Buddhism after he did....

A Brief History of Korean Buddhism

From Japan: Life and Religion

This is another reference post. Recently, I was curious about Korean Buddhism, and read this article, which provided a nice, concise overview. But I noticed that this, and other sources on Korean Buddhism were somewhat light on details, or only focus on certain periods of time or people.

So, because I like to do reference posts sometimes, I decided to do one on Korean Buddhist history. Especially since Korean Buddhism is becoming more popular in the West. My information comes from a book titled Korea Old and New: A History, which I’ve read here and there, plus additional information from Wikipedia and this article.

Just as I am fascinated with Buddhist history in Japan and Okinawa, I have been curious lately about Korean Buddhist history too. This is just a brief history, and I hope to post more later....

To Love a Bandit: A Review of Osamu Tezuka’s “Buddha: the Great Departure"

New Lotus

2011-10-08

It is not often that a Buddhist can give an extended review of an animated epic about the Buddha, because as far as my inexperience knows there have been no animated films to begin with that enjoy the same financial backing and sheer effort as Osamu Tezuka’s “Buddha”, which will be presented in three films. “The Great Departure” is the first movie in this manga-to-silver screen trilogy, which I watched in Amsterdam on the first night of the sixth Buddhist Film Festival Europe (October 1st – 3rd, 2011). It is a visually sumptuous and artistically awe-inspiring film, with intriguing reinterpretations and some regrettable omissions that differ from both its manga original and the canonical accounts of the Buddha’s early life. It offers sprawling, scenic panoramas of northern India and the Himalayas, and a gritty and gory panorama of war, violent deaths and eviscerated corpses. It utilizes the latest in animation to show off the miracles of young Siddhartha, from the opening where the bodhisattva hare throws its own body into the fire to the white, six-tusked elephant that (mystically, mind you, not sexually) enters the stunningly drawn Queen Māyā....
